JULY: Pushing Boundaries
Solo EP
a[void]r Selected improvised set
Alexander Moravcsik is a San Francisco-based multi-disciplinary artist currently focusing on the development of extended techniques for live hardware improvised electronic music. Trained as a jazz pianist and composer at Princeton University, his current project a[void]r (pronounced avoider)—a collaboration with fellow musician, DJ, and engineer Rob Whitaker—aspires to thoughtfully integrate the sensibilities of post-minimalism and modern jazz with the heady euphoria of the dancefloor through ephemeral, fully improvised live sets.
As Artist-in-Residence, Moravcsik hopes to push the boundaries of the project through deep listening and score analysis, formal transcription—of influences ranging from Floating Points and James Holden to Adrienne Lenker—as well as by developing a bespoke digital sample bank of “micro-compositions” for the duo to draw on during live performance. Additionally, he will be exploring the development of new works by Krista Detor.
In his spare time, Alexander has an active fine arts photography practice and spent the last few months in Southeast Alaska, homesteading on a remote island and attempting to capture the vast landscape and ecology of the region. He also enjoys organizing music festivals for his friends, cooking, and playing the banjo.
PX3 Priz De La Photographie Paris
In 2018, at the age of 19, Alex won the Gold Award for his series of photographs during his time studying jazz in Paris.
He's remained passionate about the art form and has expanded subject matter to include the natural world as he encounters it in his travels. He'll be capturing elements of The Hundredth Hill during his stay, and we'll be posting his larger collection in the next weeks.
In the meanwhile, click through to see the series of shots that won him the gold.
